The first page on the website had to be the last site that I managed. I was fortunate enough to be the senior reserve manager of the Stiperstones NNR for the last 16 years, heading up a small team of dedicated wardens who between us manage the habitats, the access tracks, signage, grazing animals, fences etc and monitor the wildlife that is uniquely special in this part of Shropshire.
The Stiperstones tends to be known for its heathland and rocky outcrops, however it has a great variety of upland habitats that aren’t necessarily recognised by the visiting public, including upland oak woodlands full of pied flycatchers, wet mires with special butterflies and dragonflies and meadows awash with orchids and mountain pansies.
Last year the site tripled in size, taking in various partner owned land, to become the Stiperstones Landscape National Nature Reserve, one of 25 in the King’s Series of NNRs. It now stretches from Earls Hill above Pontesbury down to Heath Mynd, just north of Bishops Castle.
